As a Locomotive Engineer, you'll be at the heart of our operations—ensuring freight gets where it needs to go safely, efficiently, and reliably. You'll be trusted to operate locomotives, interpret train orders and signals, and uphold the highest standards of safety and performance.This role isn't just about operating trains—it's about being a key part of a team that keeps supply chains flowing and communities connected.ResponsibilitiesComply with all federal, state, company and other applicable safety and operational rules and regulationsInspect locomotive for operational readiness by making federal- and company-required checksReceive and review train consist, which provides the physical makeup of train and includes weights, lengths, location of loads and empties, and cars requiring special handlingApply knowledge of territory, including terrain, grades, curves, and grade crossings, to give prescribed warning signals and operate the train in a safe mannerComply with train orders, train signals, radio communications, and railroad rules and regulations to operate the locomotive in an efficient and safe mannerObserve track to detect obstructions and anticipate operating problems, as required by federal or company rules; diagnose minor malfunctions and perform minor maintenance and servicing activities when maintenance personnel are not availableCommunicate with Conductor or Traffic‑Control Personnel by radio to exchange information and instructions concerning stops, delays, or oncoming trainsComplete required paperwork/electronic logs accurately, including hours of service dataConduct or actively participate in job safety briefingsNotify proper authorities and prepare reports to explain accidents, unscheduled stops, or delaysAssist with other projects and perform other duties as assignedWorking Conditions / Physical RequirementsFull-time (40 plus hours weekly)Varying schedule in a 24/7 work environment that includes nights, holidays, weekends, and on-call as neededOutdoor work in all weather conditions working up to a 12-hour shiftWalking long distances on uneven surfaces and climbing ladders and equipment always ensuring three points of contact in varying environmental conditionsAble to lift up to 75 pounds from floor to waist and carry short distancesAble to squat, bend and lift overheadHave good balance and coordinationMust meet vision requirements (including color)Skills and ExperiencePast experience as a Locomotive Engineer or ConductorAbility to recognize colors and understand visual displaysAbility to judge speed/distance of objects or moving partsExperience in a 24/7 work environment with exposure to outside weather conditionsEffective communication skills both written and verbalExperience working in a safety-sensitive environment is a plusPossess situational awareness and decision-making abilities to respond effectively in a safety sensitive environmentRequired Education and CredentialsHigh school diploma or GED; or an equivalent combination of education and work experienceValid driver's licenseValid locomotive engineer certification is a plusAt least 18 years of ageEmployment RequirementsPre-employment physical, hearing, and vision medical reviewSubject to federally mandated drug and alcohol testing including pre-employment drug screeningBackground screening including criminal and motor vehicle driving historyRelocationMust live within 50 miles of assigned location or be willing to relocate.
